The anti-slavery Radical Republicans and the pro-slavery Knights of the Golden Circle wanted Lincoln dead. Both planned to kill Lincoln at Ford’s theater on April 14, 1865. After the war, the Radical Republicans wanted to execute the secessionist and deny the south the right to vote. Lincoln wanted to exonerate the South, have no revenge, and allow them to vote. The Radical Republicans couldn’t forgive and couldn’t allow the South to vote. They planned Lincoln’s assassination for April 14, 1865. Edwin Stanton was in charge, and his assassin was James William Boyd. Also at the end of the war, the Knights of the Golden Circle believed that they could save the Confederacy by throwing the U.S. government into confusion. They planned to kill the president, Abraham Lincoln; the vice-president, Andrew Johnson; and the Secretary of State, William Seward. John Wilkes Booth was in charge of the assassinations.

I love history and I love conspiracy theories, so I was more than delighted to come across "They Wanted Lincoln Dead" by Troy Cowan. Mr. Cowan has really done his research and presents a compelling argument that there was so much more going beyond the scenes before Lincoln's assassination that it is very possible John Wilkes Booth was no more than just a patsy in a much larger and darker scheme than anyone could imagine. Cowan presents a very detailed and enlightening list of suspects, some of them quite shocking. Whether you believe in any of the Lincoln conspiracies or not, "They Wanted Lincoln Dead" is a lot of fun to read and I highly recommend it.Product details

I enjoyed the detail and organization of the book. Hopefully the details are documentable.
I found this book interesting, but nothing special. Too much speculation which was presented as fact. none the less, it got me thinking.
This book about the Lincoln assassination, contains at least three different conspiracies. One is the one plotted by Lincoln's Secretary of war, Edwin Stanton. Another involves Vice president Johnson talking with John Wilkes Booth about assassinating Lincoln, and the third involves Booth and his association with the Knights of the golden circle.
